TEENAGE BEHAVIOUR AND ATTITUDES

Before you read skim the e-mail below and answer these questions

a) What is the purpose of this e-mail?

b) Can you identify some of the phrases people use when they write e-mails of complaint?

Read this e-mail. Underline the phrases used to express complaint.

From: ggoldenblue@hotmail.com

To: tteach14@yahoo.com

Subject: Funky World Radio Programme

I have listened to some of your interviews in your weekly radio programme called Funky World. Some of them are just fine, like the one you did to this young editor of Teens magazine. But I would like to complain about the content and the vocabulary used in a recent interview to a group of adolescents who play music in the street.

I simply could not tolerate their sperficiality and the way they expressed their apathy towards life. On many occasions they used swear words and were really disrespectful, which is an intolerable situation for most radio listeners.

I really do not know what is wrong with young people nowadays. All they seem to worry about is their looks and having fun. Those rings in their noses, navels and tongues are probably the reason why they cannot get a decent job. I personally think they behave like this on pupose so that they do not have to work. They are not responsible enough.

There is too little respect in our society at present. Teenagers, in particular, are too disrespectful. In my days, the police would stop you and send you to prison if you were caught drinking in the street. But now, you see lots of teenagers with their beer cans walking around or meeting other groups of teens who block the streets and do not let you get through. Then, there are these bands of rebels that play this horrible music really oud. I think it is fine if they play music loud on their MP5s or iPods - or whatever you may call them. But it is not really music what they listen to. There are more than enough opportunities for teenagers today. Education is now available to everyone and adolesents simply do not care about it. They just think studying is too boring. They will probably regret it later!

I can fully understand that the interviews you have on Funky World are basecally for your teenage listeners. But you also have to consider that there may be some others like me, who just listen to you because I want to understand teenage culture a bit more. I have three young grandchildren and we are not communicating well these days. I sincerely hope that you will be more careful about the kind of language and the content of your future programmes.

G. Goldenblue

After you read the e-mail, write down notes and answer these questions:

a) Do any of the complaints about young people sound familiar to you? Explain your point of you.

b) Have your parents or grandparents ever told you something like that? Why?

3) Is the man right in any of his complaints? Explain your thought.

Error = plan -  ted

Correcto =   plant  -  ed

Error = fe -lt

Error= plac - ed

Correcto = real - ly

Correcto = play - ing

Correcto= pre - cede

Ejemplos

Correcto = bid - ding

Correcto= stop - ping

Ejemplos:

mod - el

mo -tor

pit -y

pi - rate

sat - in

RIGHTS IN BRITAIN

  • In Britain, the age of majority is eighteen and you are then legally an adult. At this age, the law says that you can take all the decisions that affect your life. For example, you can vote in elections.

  • Education is compulsory from the age of five to the age of sixteen. However, many young people choose to stay at school until they are eighteen.

  • Young people can get married at the age of sixteen, with their parents' permission. At eighteen, you can marry without anyone else's permissions.

  • In England and Wales, ten-year-olds are responsible for any crimes they commit. In Scotland the age is eight.  Children do not go to adult prisons but stay in special centres for young people.

  • Young people cannot drink alcohol in a pub, work or in a bar until they are eighteen. Sixteen-year- old who are working in supermarkets cannot sell alcohol. If someone buys a bottle of wine, a supervisor comes to help them. You can drink alcohol at home from the age of five.

  • You can ride a moped when you are sixteen. You can have a full driving licence from the age of seventeen when you have passed the driving test.

  • Young people cannot work until the age of thirteen, and nobody under sixteen can work for more than two hours on a school day. When you are sixteen, you can leave school and work full-time.
