RIGHTS IN BRITAIN

- In Britain, the age of majority is eighteen and you are then legally an adult. At this age, the law says that you can take all the decisions that affect your life. For example, you can vote in elections.
- Education is compulsory from the age of five to the age of sixteen. However, many young people choose to stay at school until they are eighteen.
- Young people can get married at the age of sixteen, with their parents' permission. At eighteen, you can marry without anyone else's permissions.
- In England and Wales, ten-year-olds are responsible for any crimes they commit. In Scotland the age is eight. Children do not go to adult prisons but stay in special centres for young people.
- Young people cannot drink alcohol in a pub, work or in a bar until they are eighteen. Sixteen-year- old who are working in supermarkets cannot sell alcohol. If someone buys a bottle of wine, a supervisor comes to help them. You can drink alcohol at home from the age of five.
- You can ride a moped when you are sixteen. You can have a full driving licence from the age of seventeen when you have passed the driving test.
- Young people cannot work until the age of thirteen, and nobody under sixteen can work for more than two hours on a school day. When you are sixteen, you can leave school and work full-time.
